Koala sofa bed and ottoman for open flats

The Best Modern Sofa Bed for Open-Plan Flats in 2026

Open-plan flats put your furniture on display from every angle. The kitchen, the dining area, the hallway — they all have a sightline to your sofa. That makes most modern sofa beds a problem. Pull out the metal frame, unroll the thin foam mat, and you've got something designed to sit against a wall in a spare room — not to anchor a living space that's visible all day.

The Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] is built differently. It's a proper sofa first, with 63cm of seat depth and a fully finished back that looks as considered from behind as from the front. When you need a bed, the FlipBed™ mechanism converts it in one motion — no frame to unfold, no cushions to remove, no pushing furniture out of the way. Add the matching Ottoman for hidden storage and an optional side table, and you have a complete living and sleeping setup sized for real flats.

This guide covers both products in full: sizes, fabrics, mechanism, sleep quality, and what to think about before you buy.

Note on Koala's size names: Koala's Single, Double, and King designations refer to the width of the open sleep surface — they do not correspond to standard British mattress dimensions. A Koala King opens to 178cm wide, which is closer to a UK Super King (180cm) than a standard UK King (150cm). Before purchasing bedding, check Koala's sheet size guidance or contact Koala directly to confirm the correct fit.

What you need to know about floor space: When the Koala Sofa Bed is deployed as a bed, the total footprint depth is 222.5cm — that's the distance from the back of the sofa to the far edge of the open bed. In a typical open-plan flat, measure this distance before you order. A useful rule of thumb: leave at least 2.5 metres of clear floor in front of the sofa for comfortable bed conversion.

The FlipBed™ mechanism

FlipBed™ converts the sofa to a bed in one motion, in seconds, with no tools and no floor clearance behind the sofa.

Unlike a traditional pull-out mechanism — which requires you to remove cushions, pull a metal frame forward, and unfold the mattress — FlipBed™ works by flipping the seat cushion forward. The sofa unfolds flat in a single, continuous motion — Koala describes it as "one smooth flip", taking seconds.

This matters specifically in an open-plan flat, where the sofa typically can't sit flush against a wall. Traditional pull-out mechanisms require substantial floor clearance in front of the sofa — often well over a metre — before the frame can fully extend. FlipBed™ deploys forward, but the motion is compact and controlled — the whole operation happens within the sofa's own footprint, extended into the open depth in front.

How it sleeps: Kloudcell™ and Zero Disturbance™

The Koala Sofa Bed sleeps well because it uses the same foam technology as Koala's dedicated mattress range — not a thin pad designed to fold away.

The sleep surface uses a Kloudcell™ topper drawn from Koala's dedicated mattress range. Kloudcell™ is an open-cell foam designed for breathability, support, and responsiveness — it contours to the body without trapping heat or leaving you feeling stuck in one position, delivering comfort closer to a real mattress than a standard foam pad.

The 4th Gen also includes Zero Disturbance™ motion isolation. This reduces the transfer of movement across the sleep surface — useful when two people are sleeping, and one of them moves in the night.

The Kloudcell™ topper is removable and machine-washable. Unzip it, run a cold machine wash, line dry in shade, and zip it back on. The topper can be cleaned independently of the rest of the sofa.

Traditional pull-out sofa beds require the sleep surface to fold and compress into the frame cavity — a structural constraint that limits the depth and quality of the sleeping surface. The Koala Sofa Bed has no metal frame; its sleep surface is foam only, with no mechanical compression limiting what it can offer.

Fabrics

All Koala Sofa Bed covers are removable. Which fabric you choose determines how they're washed.

Three fabric families are available, each with its own finish and care requirements:

Fabric

Options

Water-resistant

Cover care

Classic

Olive Butter, Cinnamon Sky, Morning Fog

Yes

Remove and hand-wash (warm water, mild detergent). Do not machine wash.

Cord

Sandstone, Coastal Moss

No

Cold machine wash (30°C max), line dry

Luxe

Moonlit Silver, Forest Dawn, Silver Sand

Unconfirmed — contact Koala

Cold machine wash (30°C max), line dry

For open-plan flats with daily use, pets, or children, the Cord or Luxe fabrics offer the most practical care routine — removable covers that can be cold machine-washed at home. Classic fabric covers require hand-washing, which is manageable but more involved.

Note that the Cord fabrics (Sandstone and Coastal Moss) are not water-resistant. In a high-use living space, this is worth factoring in — surface spills won't bead on Cord the way they do on Classic.

All fabrics are made with recycled content and are PFAS-tested. The frame uses FSC®-certified poplar plywood and MDF. See the full fabric guide and care instructions on the product page before choosing.

Koala Sofa Bed Ottoman

The Koala Sofa Bed Ottoman adds hidden storage and a side table function to the Koala Sofa Bed setup — a practical choice for open-plan flats where clutter has nowhere to hide.

Price: £256 | 4.0 ★ (4 reviews)

The Ottoman is sold separately and pairs with any size of the Koala Sofa Bed. It is not a connected chaise — it sits alongside the sofa as a standalone piece. Use it as a footrest, a side table (flip the top to reveal the hard surface, rated to a maximum of 5kg), or a storage unit. Lift the lid to access the internal cavity — large enough for spare bedding, blankets, or anything else you'd rather keep out of sight.

The Ottoman also has removable, washable covers in the same fabric range as the Sofa Bed, so you can match or contrast. Cover care is cold machine wash at a maximum of 30°C, line dry in shade. The frame uses FSC®-certified poplar plywood and MDF.

Do you need the Ottoman?

The Ottoman is worth adding if storage is a priority or if you want a side table without buying a separate piece of furniture.

In an open-plan flat — where there may be no linen cupboard near the living area — the Ottoman's hidden storage solves a practical problem. Keep a spare set of sheets, pillows, and a blanket inside, so guest hosting doesn't mean a trip to the bedroom wardrobe. If overnight guests are a regular priority, see Koala's sofa beds for overnight guests → for more options.

If your priority is purely footrest function and you already have good storage, the Ottoman is a useful addition — but it's genuinely most useful when the storage matters.

What to Look for in a Modern Sofa Bed for an Open-Plan Flat

The buying criteria for a sofa bed in an open-plan flat are different from those for a spare room piece. When the sofa is visible from every angle, every day, the usual priorities — does it fold out, does it sleep okay — aren't enough. Here's what actually matters.

Finished back panel

A finished back means the sofa looks as good from behind as from the front — essential when it's visible from the kitchen or hall.

Many sofa beds are designed with wall placement in mind, meaning the rear panel may not be finished to the same standard as the front. In a floating or room-dividing position, that can be immediately apparent.

A fully finished back means the sofa works from every angle: front, sides, and rear. There's no exposed frame, no raw panel — the back looks as intentional as the front, so the sofa can float in the centre of a room or define a zone boundary without showing its workings. The Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] has a fully finished back on all sizes — the tailored slipcover wraps completely around the frame.

Mechanism type

The mechanism determines how much space the sofa needs to convert, and in which direction.

Mechanism

How it works

Space needed in front

Best for

Pull-out (traditional)

Metal frame folds out from inside the sofa

Substantial — varies by model

Against a wall only

FlipBed™ (flip-forward)

Seat flips forward; sofa unfolds flat

222.5cm total open depth

Floating or room-dividing positions

For a floating position in an open-plan flat — the most common layout — a flip-forward mechanism like FlipBed™ is better suited than a traditional pull-out, because it doesn't require the sofa to sit against a wall to deploy.

Seat depth and daily comfort

Seat depth determines how comfortable the sofa is for daily use — and in a flat, you'll use it every day.

As a general guide, most standard sofas have a seat depth of around 45–55cm — comfortable for upright seating but not designed for extended lounging. The Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] sits at 63.34cm, which is meaningfully deeper — closer to full-body lounging territory. In a flat where the sofa doubles as your reading chair, TV seat, and working-from-home spot, seat depth is a quality-of-life decision.

Size relative to the room

Measure the room before you choose a size.

A practical guide:

  • As a general rule, leave at least 45cm between the sofa and adjacent furniture or walls

  • Allow 90cm or more for main circulation paths — standard guidance for accessible movement

  • Allow 222.5cm of clear floor depth in front of the sofa for bed deployment (confirmed product spec)

For width:

  • 1.5-Seater (Single, 121.9cm bed width): Studio flats, compact living rooms, rooms where the sofa is a secondary piece

  • 2.5-Seater (Double, 162.5cm bed width): Mid-size open-plan rooms; two adults sleeping occasionally

  • 3-Seater (King, 178cm bed width): Larger open-plan rooms; anchors a living zone

Measure carefully before ordering.

Washability and fabric performance

In a high-use flat, the ability to clean covers matters more than in a guest room.

All three Koala fabric types have removable covers. The practical difference is in how they're washed:

  • Cord and Luxe: Cold machine wash at 30°C. These are the most practical for households with pets, children, or heavy daily use.

  • Classic: Hand wash only — more involved but still fully removable.

  • Cord fabrics (Sandstone, Coastal Moss): Not water-resistant. Wipe spills immediately.

  • Classic: Water-resistant treatment — surface spills bead and can be wiped away quickly. Luxe water-resistance has not been explicitly confirmed on the UK product page — contact Koala before purchase if this matters to you.

The Kloudcell™ sleep topper is machine-washable on a cold cycle regardless of which outer fabric you choose.

Storage

In an open-plan flat, guest bedding has nowhere obvious to live — built-in storage is worth planning for.

The Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] has no built-in storage. If you want to keep bedding close to the sofa, add the Koala Sofa Bed Ottoman — its hidden storage cavity is designed exactly for this purpose. Alternatively, plan for under-bed storage or a nearby piece of furniture.

How to Position a Sofa Bed in an Open-Plan Flat

Where you put the sofa determines everything else — including how much floor space you'll have when it converts to a bed.

The floating sofa is the most common open-plan layout: the sofa sits away from every wall, defining a living zone in the centre of the room. A finished back is essential here (the Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] has one on all sizes). Allow 222.5cm of clear floor in front for bed deployment.

The zone divider places the sofa parallel to the kitchen or dining area, creating a visual separation between spaces. This works particularly well in longer open-plan rooms — the sofa becomes the boundary between the living zone and the cooking zone.

The alcove or partial-wall position is common in studio flats with recesses or half-walls. The sofa sits adjacent to — but not flush against — a wall, with open floor in front for conversion. Measure the available depth carefully.

Anchor the zone with a rug. An area rug placed under the sofa and coffee table makes a floating setup feel grounded and intentional — particularly useful in open-plan flats without a natural focal point like a fireplace.

Sofa Bed Care and Longevity

How long a sofa bed lasts depends on frame quality, mechanism durability, and foam resilience — all factors Koala backs with a 5-year warranty on the Sofa Bed [4th Gen].

Day-to-day care basics:

  • Vacuum covers weekly on a low setting to remove dust and pet hair

  • Wipe surface spills immediately on Classic fabric (confirmed water-resistant treatment — works best when spills are caught quickly). For Luxe fabric, water-resistance is implied by the product page but not explicitly confirmed — contact Koala UK to verify.

  • Machine wash Cord and Luxe covers as needed (cold, 30°C max, line dry in shade, fully dry before replacing)

  • Hand wash Classic covers with warm water and mild detergent when needed — do not machine wash

  • Machine wash the Kloudcell™ topper separately on a cold cycle, line dry fully before replacing

  • Do not tumble dry, iron, or bleach any covers

Sofa Bed FAQs

What is FlipBed™ and how is it different from a traditional pull-out?

FlipBed™ is Koala's flip-forward conversion mechanism. The seat cushion flips away from you, and the sofa unfolds flat into a full-size sleep surface in one motion — no metal frame to extend, no cushions to remove, no tools required. Koala describes the conversion as "one smooth flip", taking seconds.

A traditional pull-out sofa bed stores a hinged metal frame and thin mattress inside the sofa body. Opening it requires pulling the frame forward and unfolding it — a process that typically requires substantial floor clearance in front of the sofa and often involves removing seat cushions first. FlipBed™ requires no clearance behind the sofa, and the sleep surface is full-depth foam rather than a pad constrained by the frame.

What size Koala Sofa Bed do I need?

For two adults sleeping occasionally, the 2.5-Seater (Double, 162.5cm bed width) is the most practical starting point. For a single person in a studio flat, the 1.5-Seater (Single, 121.9cm) keeps the sofa proportionate to the room. The 3-Seater (King, 178cm) suits larger open-plan rooms where the sofa anchors a living zone.

All three sizes have the same 222.5cm open depth — see the size guide above for full floor space requirements and the note on how Koala's size names relate to standard UK bedding sizes before you order sheets.

Are sofa bed covers washable?

The Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] has removable covers on all fabrics. How you wash them depends on the fabric: Cord and Luxe covers can be cold machine-washed at 30°C and line-dried. Classic covers are hand-wash only — remove them, wash with warm water and a mild detergent, and line dry. The inner lining on all fabrics is spot-clean only. The Kloudcell™ sleep topper is machine-washable on a cold cycle separately from the covers. Always check the label inside each cover for specific instructions.

Does the Ottoman connect to the Sofa Bed as a corner sofa or chaise?

No. The Koala Sofa Bed Ottoman is a standalone piece — it does not attach to the sofa bed frame. It sits alongside the sofa and functions as a footrest, side table, or storage unit. If you want a corner sofa configuration, the Ottoman does not provide that. It is a companion piece for storage, foot comfort, and occasional use as a side table.
